Republican vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance was mocked on Monday after he called for the United States to "conquer" distant stars.
Following a successful test of SpaceX's Starship, Vance took to X to praise billionaire owner Elon Musk, who has endorsed Donald Trump's Republican presidential ticket.
"I believe the destiny of this country is to conquer the stars," Vance wrote. "Whatever your views of Elon's politics, this is something that should inspire all of us."
But some struggled to get behind Vance's call for an interstellar crusade.
"Wtf does 'conquer the stars' mean?" one Vance parody account noted. "What a bizarre thing to say."
"Can we conquer the stars and also not become a dictatorship?" Jay Collins asked.
"Our destiny is to never allow an authoritarian dictator to become president," Steve Martin wrote.
